| Shalini is a guitarist and bass player with an affinity for ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s pop music. Her eagerly anticipated fourth full-length, The Surface and the Shine (Electric Devil/125) is due out fall. Citing influences from the Supremes and other Motown acts to Elvis, the Beatles and punk and art-influenced bands like the Go-Go’s, R.E.M., and Let’s Active, Shalini shines with a light all her own.
Shalini fronted San Francisco’s Vinyl Devotion in the ‘90s, enjoying modest college radio success with record singles, an EP and full length, Floor Model. She even won first prize in Rockrgrl Magazine’s songwriting contest with her song, “Digital Noise” which was judged by Joey Ramone! After moving to the South, she expanded her musical horizons by trying to fill in gaps in her rock education and meeting more seasoned and professional-level musicians, which boosted her own self-taught level of playing. Normally, Shalini wouldn’t have used her own name as the band name, but her friends Mitch Easter and Don Dixon talked her into it. She figured it was the same thing as a regular band name, with a more obvious statement defining the main songwriter. And songs are the most important aspect of a band to Shalini, not a guest list, a certain kind of website, or some other statement. Her goals have remained the same: to write great songs and put on a first-class live show. The theme of The Surface and the Shine is more cosmic and mature, but the songs retain the thread of fun that runs through Shalini’s previous material. Her four-piece live band is preparing for fall shows in the Midwest and Southeast and a track from the album, “Rose In December” is being featured on a Waterstone Guitars benefit album in support of the American Stroke Society and Brain Aneurysm Foundation. |
